The Rotary Club of Scarborough is proud to be partnering with Water for Africa to help construct a well for the Mtera Village in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Access to a reliable high quality water supply is something we take for granted, but without it, life is very hard.
Mtera Village is located in Iringa Lulo in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. With a population of 4500, this is predominantly a farming region, where communities grow their own food, and the fortunate ones own a few goats and cows. The Masai and Go-go tribes are still living in mud huts with grass roofs. Life is tough and struggle is the focus.

We spoke to a local Mrs. Eda, she was aged 61 and was born in this village. She told us that the women and girls were walking 9 kilometres to collect contaminated water, twice per day. This was taking them seven hours each day. Sickness and disease are rife among the community as the water contains worms and they would have to navigate the elephants, lions and venomous snakes.

Thanks to your incredible sponsorship, everything changed in February 2025 when the bore hole well was successfully drilled in this community. The community gathered to see their first sight of clean water! The Masai and Go-go tribes played handmade wooden instruments, dancing and singing as they celebrated.

During the dedication service, testimonies and the good news was shared, and everyone was leaning into listen. Their hearts were deeply touched.

“Today we are so happy, we have nothing to give you but our prayers and we thank God he sent you and remembers us.” Mrs. Eda
