We recently received a wonderful update from the team at Water for Africa. The water well sponsored by the Scarborough Rotary Club has been successfully drilled in the Mufindi District of Tanzania, and safe, clean drinking water is now flowing.
This project directly supports the Mafinga Technical Secondary School and the surrounding community. Located in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, it is a predominantly farming region where daily survival is often the main focus for the 2,502 residents and 462 students.
Before the well was drilled, the situation was incredibly difficult. Headteacher Mr. Gilbert Charles explained that students were walking two to three kilometres each day to fetch contaminated water. Not only did this cause them to miss valuable classroom time, but the journey was particularly unsafe for the girls. Waterborne diseases like typhoid were common, and maintaining basic personal hygiene at the school was a constant struggle.
Thanks to the club's sponsorship and the hard work of Water for Africa, that reality changed in July 2026. A new borehole was successfully drilled, providing immediate relief, safety, and a massive boost to local health.
The team on the ground shared that students and locals gathered to witness their first sight of clean water flowing, openly sharing their gratitude in prepared speeches.
As Mr. Charles told us:
“Thank you so much for helping us and showing us this love, the students promise to work hard and we know this water will not only change our lives but it will impact our grades.”
