Special evening held at the WA Golf Club to acknowledge the scholarship winners who have returned to tell us about their experiences and how they are using the scholarship to help shape their future.

Youth Presentations: Emily Overmeire - Churchlands Senior High School Final year at Churchlands Rotary sponsored Emily to attend the National Youth Science Forum in Brisbane 11,000 participants have attended since inception. 12 day residency at The University of Queensland various science speakers & exhibitions.
Emily described the experience as a trip of a lifetime Emily was able to see pathways in science she had never considered taking before She was able to meet a lot of like minded students and build friendships.Emily was now completing her final year of school with renewed focus and with a much broader horizon.
Emily Zhang - Carine Senior High School Graduated in 2017, now studying medicine. RYLA - Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a leadership program coordinated by Rotary Clubs around the globe. Each year, thousands of young people participate in this program. Young people ages 13–30 are sponsored by Rotary Clubs to attend the event run by the club's district committee. Participants are chosen for their leadership potential. Rotary Clubs and the Rotary District cover
all expenses for the participants. The format of the event vary from district to district, but commonly take the form of a seminar, camp, or workshop to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the event's curriculum. RYLA aims to:[1] Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth; Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders; Encourage leadership of youth by youth; Recognise publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities. Every RYLA program covers the following core topics:[1] Fundamentals of leadership Ethics of positive leadership Importance of communication skills in effective leadership Problem-solving and conflict management Rotary's purpose and service to the community Building self-confidence and self-esteem Elements of community and global citizenship Emily was enlightened by attending RYLA. They had different speakers every day They learnt about team development, interpersonal skills. They put these skills into practice by going on all day hike. Learnt how to work together as a team and show leadership. Emily learnt how to be self motivated. These new skills are helping her out at Uni where you had to be self motivated where she was studying medicine. She was now taking up active leadership at University. RYLA had greatly assisted Emily in gaining confidence. Emily learned how to speak in public and made a lot of lifelong friends Developed strong foundation for future personal development.
Madi Smith, out Rotary exchange student to Norway last year gave us a brief synopsis of her year away and what she undertaking at university now. Madi described how the year had enhanced her life & again thanked the club accordingly.

Guest Speaker:
Peter Whyte introduced our Guest Speaker Grant Stone. - Grant came to Perth to study zoology, worked as a librarian Laughter Yoga Age 44 and Grant suffered a stroke. Was advised to slow down. As part of his rehabilitation discovered Laughter Yoga. B.Sc. (Hons); Dip.Ed; Dip.Lib.Studies. Grant Stone is a laughterholic (recovering). Although a Librarian by training Grant discovered Laughter Yoga as part of recovery from a stroke in 1989. He trained with Dr. Kataria in 2000 and helped found the Perth Laughter Club the same year. Grant became involved in the formation of Laugh WA Inc. in 2002 and was the foundation Convenor. He has trained hundreds of people to become Laughter Leaders to spread the laughter word throughout the community.
Our members facilitate Laughter Clubs in Western Australia in order to bring the benefits of Laughter Yoga to all Western Australians, regardless of their circumstances. Through Laughter Yoga, we build healthier minds, bodies and communities. Our Laughter Yoga Leaders and Teachers facilitate Laughter Clubs, and also provide presentations for clubs and schools, as well as health, corporate and private events. Laughter Yoga has been introduced into Aged Care, to People with Disabilities, and into the Health and Mental Health Sectors. Workplaces can also benefit from Laughter Yoga – a happy workforce is more productive!
