Club Meeting 15th January 2026

It was a great meeting on 15th January where we inducted 3 new members.

Dave O'Gorman
Dave comes from a background in logistics having founded a courier service in the Natal Midlands in South Africa, then in partnership with others, launched a national and international express delivery service based in Johannesburg.

After selling his shares in the business Dave relocated to Australia to join his two children Charmaine and Mark.

Dave enjoys sculpting and being active.

Ethan Dadras
Ethan Dadras, Chartered Professional Engineer (Civil Engineering & Leadership/Management), is a Fellow member of Engineers Australia.

He is the Director of Ground Civil, a Perth-based civil engineering consultancy specialising in land development, road design, water and sewer infrastructure, and stormwater management.

Holding a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Curtin University, Ethan leads multidisciplinary projects across Western Australia from feasibility through to detailed design and delivery, providing strategic guidance to clients.

Outside of engineering, he is a WA state and Australian national Taekwondo champion, reflecting his dedication and resilience.

Nina Amlakian
Nina has a background in community services and psychology, and is currently completing her Master of Rehabilitation Counselling.

Over the years, she has worked in roles that have allowed her to support people with disabilities, mental health challenges, and families from diverse backgrounds.

She is skilled in behaviour support, staff training, and service coordination, and tries her best to approach every situation with patience, compassion, and respect. She enjoys learning, and has completed qualifications in community services, early childhood education, and training and assessment, which have helped her support both clients and staff in meaningful ways.

She doesn't see herself as an expert—She simply aims to keep improving, continue her education, and use her skills to help others feel supported and understood. Building positive relationships, listening carefully, and creating a safe space for people are values that guide her work every day.

Exchange Student Update

We were very pleased to welcome back Nicole Radford who has just returned from a year in Brazil. Nicole gave us a whistlestop tour of her year which looked like it included some unforgettable experiences, albeit with some challenges along the way.

We also heard from our current inbound Brazilian exchange student Manuella who told us some of the thing she has been doing during her exchange year in Australia.

We also bid farewell to our outgoing exchange student Grace Johnson, who leaves this week for a year in Brazil.

We're looking forward to hearing about Grace's year overseas.

The Chase the Ace jackpot continues to build and odds of winning continue to improve.

The jackpot is now up to $652.05 and there are only 11 cards left, so well worth buying some tickets at the next meeting.

Don't forget to support the Karrinyup swapmart. This is our club's major fundraiser and enables us to do the projects we do.

Dakar Rally Success
The Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia may not at first glance appear to have any connection to the Rotary Club of Scarborough but this year there is one, albeit somewhat tangential.

This year's winners in the car category were Nasser Al-Attiyah from Qatar and Fabian Lurquin from Belgium.

Fabian was an exchange student hosted by our club in 1994/95 and has maintained a close relationship with some club members since.

Fabian and his family came to Perth for a visit in 2025, in just another demonstration of long-term benefits of Rotary Youth Exchange.

Rotary District Conference

Enjoy a relaxed Friday evening at the Country Club chatting to old Rotary friends and International Exchange students over canapes and drinks.

On Saturday morning strap yourself in for some great sessions. Four eminent speakers will enthral you with stories of Australia from First Peoples, the race to Botany Bay, gold medal triumphs and our impressive Rule of Law.

In the second session we learn of exceptional services to humanity through building schools in Africa, affordable homes for the homeless and how Rotary moulded one of our impressive men in blue.

The instigator of our Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation leads off after lunch, followed by our Northam hosts and several 5-minute cameos showcasing recent exciting Rotary projects.

Three lively speakers will exercise your laughing muscles in the last session Saturday as they entertain you with “Proud to be a Little Bit Crazy”.

The Wise Wine Gala Dinner will be catered by a wonderful local caterer, with music from Erica Houston’s “Heartbeats’ band.

On Sunday morning you will hear three great stories from the West Australian bush and after morning tea we finish the Conference with two inspiring young men who will leave you in tears with their passion and commitment….

Indian developer donates US$50 million to The Rotary Foundation.

Declaring that “giving is a duty,” longtime Rotary member Ravishankar Dakoju pledged that he and his wife and fellow club member, Paola Dakoju, would donate approximately US$50 million (4.5 billion Indian rupees) to The Rotary Foundation.

Dakoju announced the gift at Rotary’s International Assembly in Orlando, Florida, USA, on 13 January.
