Summary of Annual Report
2016 - 2017
Key points made in Hugh’s Annual report:
Hugh decided to take on the Presidents role after it was clear that the sharing the role between four past Presidents was not ideal.
A number of other key drivers that also influenced his decision – new faces coming on to the Board and the opportunity to continue to guide the New Generations group.
Identified a number of key areas/initiatives for the coming year.
Areas of key focus
A strong social program
Preparation of a publicity handout
Development of a new web site
Publicity to be considered at every opportunity
A highly successful 60th anniversary function.. A number of past members attended
The production of a booklet by Rob Collins entitled “60 Years Service to the Community”.
The passing of Past District Governor John Hugh Webster
Weekly meetings had a few changes
A more casual start , no grace, able to start the meal before the commencement of the meeting
An improvement in dress code
Re-introduction of the “reception” position
“Chase the Ace” became a standard feature
“Count Down” on the screen ensured starting on time
Dave Taylor organised some excellent speakers throughout the year – they included Liza Harvey: Andrea Mitchell; Kieran Kinsella; Geoffrey Thomas and many others. We also had a very successful “Hat Day” driven by Di Allen.
Membership started off with a bang with eight New Generation members bring inducted. The membership team made sure visitors were made welcome and provided strong mentorship to new members
The Club changed to the “Club Runner” web site and three New Generation members volunteered to populate it. Dave Taylor has been able to provide support having implemented the product for the District web site.
There was uncertainty re the relocation of the Swapmart venue given the Shopping Centre was about to undergo renovations. In the end no change occurred during the Rotary year, but the uncertainty continues.
In the area of publicity Jim Joseph and Alan Bennett produced a brochure about the Club that can be handed out to visitors and new members. The New Generations Committee did an excellent job in ensuring photos relating to their donations were taken. Other than the above, there was little additional publicity.
Chronicle – Di Allen continued to produce an excellent read. It is intended that the Chronicle be produced via the Clubs web site this year.
The Clock Tower was finally relocated 6.2 metres to the west of its previous position.
Social activities – there was a full social calendar with proposed events published and handed out at Changeover. We had dinners, bowls afternoon, weekend away and more.
Projects – 40 projects/initiatives were funded through the year coming to a total of $116,628 from Swapmart earnings and $128,708 from Trust interest. (This included a $60,000 donation to fund the Autism Register)
Budget and Finance – determining a budget was complicated by the fact that Swapmartt revenue was uncertain due to the proposed renovation of the Shopping Centre. For the first time interest from the Trust was brought directly into the overall funding picture. Until this point it had always been seen as an additional source of revenue.
Conclusion – overall the Club had a successful year, however there is cause for concern. Membership numbers have remained about the same, but each year the average age goes up.
It is crucial that all members make every effort to bring in young members to join the New Generations Group. If this Group does not grow, I fear for its future.
