Myanmar
Mar 10, 2022 7:00 am
John Southalan is a mediator, barrister, and academic. He first worked with Burmese lawyers, on rule of law and democracy issues in Myanmar (Burma) through the Australian Volunteers Abroad program in 1999 and 2000. Since that time, John has regularly volunteered in legal capacity training programs on the Thai-Burma border (2006-2014) and then in Myanmar (2017-2020). He has also written articles including ‘Burma and the common law? An uncommon question’ (Thailand Law Journal 2006) and ‘Impunity and Judicial Independence’ (Legal Issues on Burma Journal 2004). The country, as a former British colony, has some similar legal legacies to other colonies like Australia. But with great ethnic diversity and a history of military governments, there is a very an uncertain road ahead. |

An interesting life - Science Solutions
May 19, 2022 7:00 am
Doug McGhie is 72 years old, a Perth local who still leads a very active life. If not spending an hour or two with us at a breakfast meeting he would usually have ridden from his home in North Beach to the Hillary’s Marina, where he will have swum about 1.5 kilometres and then ridden home again. He swims year-round in the ocean, as illustrated by his 650 or so Scarboro Polar Bear swims. He was educated at South Perth and Leederville Primary Schools and Perth Modern School. He has three degrees from UWA and is a Life Member of the UWA Graduate Management Association, Scarboro Surf Lifesaving Club and UWA Torpedoes Water Polo Club. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants. He was recently, for three years, Warden of the Convocation of UWA Graduates, all 140,000 of them. He has lived and worked across the state, with time in Narrogin, Bunbury and Kununurra, and has consulted in every region of the state, that work even extending into the Northern Territory and occasionally across the nation. He has managed his boutique consulting firm (Science Matters) with Jill, his wife of 50 years, for the last 30 years, carefully selecting partners for an exciting range of work. Late last year he flew to Broome to do some work on a station on the Fitzroy River that is owned by Gina Rinehart. While there he worked with some key people in Kimberley agriculture and Indigenous issues. Doug has always been a passionate volunteer, for example in surf lifesaving, football, basketball, water polo, and university support. In Surf Lifesaving in W.A. he has been Volunteer of the Year, Coach of the Year and has won the President’s Medal. He has been awarded as Scarboro Surf Club’s most enthusiastic member several times. In May he will tell us a bit about a career based in Science, confirming that Science Matters, but so in life do many other things. |
