Men's Health
Jul 08, 2021
Paul has always been interested in Men’s Mental wellbeing and the prevention of male suicide, especially after losing a family member and 2 close friends in a two year period. He started to ask some serious questions. Does a “one size fits all” approach really help solve male mental health issues across age groups? Why is there a record amount of rehab services available for men to access, yet male mental health continues to decline and suicide rates continue to climb? Is there an opportunity to focus on more prehab initiatives and awareness building, in order to bring better balance to the male mental health ecosystem? And so the Men’s Talk Charity was born in Scarborough. Men’s Talk is about mainstreaming conversation around Mental Health and Wellness in men of all ages, redefining masculinity and teaching all men to practice effective communication for wellbeing. We aim to achieve this through a wide array of activities including, but not limited to, open forum platforms, media and community support and activities that all the community can participate in. At some point, we have to stop pulling people out of the river and go upstream and find out why they are falling in. - Bishop Desmond Tutu |

Perth Then and Now
Jul 15, 2021
Richard's book, "Perth Then and Now", accurately matches historic photographs of the city with specially commissioned contemporary views that show how each site looks today. With an Aboriginal history going back over 40,000 years, Perth ranks amongst the oldest places on earth with near continuous human habitation. The modern city came into being in 1829 with the formation of the Swan River Colony. For the first 60 years of its existence, Perth was no more than a small country town which lived on an economic knife-edge between riches and ruin. Then, in the 1890s, commercial quantities of gold were discovered in the North and East of Western Australia. This sparked the first of several mineral booms in the State and resulted in Perth being able to demonstrate its newfound wealth in the form grandiose buildings which transformed the modest town into the fine city we know today. In this talk, taken from the Richard’s best-selling book, photos past and present are laid side by side in a fascinating visual tour around the capital of Western Australia. .

My Home Project
Jul 29, 2021
After a successful career as Creative Director and Director in advertising and marketing, Michelle returned to university to study architecture. She has been practicing as an architect for over 14 years and has won various Architectural Awards for design and urban design. Five years ago, Michelle established her architecture practice, focussing on single and group dwelling residential projects. Many of her clients are down-sizing from large family homes and Michelle’s work explores the space efficiencies of compact housing footprints which can still deliver joyful and comfortable designs which provide a sense of spaciousness and connection to natural light as well as delivering energy efficient, thermally comfortable homes. Michelle has used the learnings and design elements of her private projects to address the quality and comfort of social and low cost affordable housing. She founded “My Home” in 2018 to build homes for people experiencing homelessness, believing that we couldn’t wait any longer for the government to do the job. Her designs for the project demonstrate how this can be achieved, believing that the North Fremantle homes should be a demonstration of the standard of housing for everyone, including people experiencing homelessness and poverty. |

A career in building and beyond
Sep 09, 2021
Dale Alcock is a homegrown success story, from bricklayer to Australia’s leading home builder. He commenced his career as an apprentice bricklayer in 1979 in the small Wheatbelt town of Kellerberrin. Under the direction of his father, Dale learned practical skills that would stay with him for life. But more importantly, he gained valuable tactical knowledge and experience that would shape his career and ultimately the future of Australia’s building industry. At just 25, Dale moved to Perth and joined since-retired partners, Garry Brown-Neaves and John Webb, to launch Dale Alcock Homes. The company exceeded all expectations from the very first year, after Dale tripled his target for the number of home completions. It was a sign of great success to come when, in the years that followed, Dale went on to establish the ABN Group as it operates today – Australia’s leading Construction, Property and Finance Group of Companies. Under the leadership of Dale as Managing Director, the ABN Group operates in Western Australia and Victoria and has built more than 90,000 homes across the two states. It is comprised of 20 companies with more than 1800 employees, approximately 100 apprentices and 2000 contractors. Dale remains an avid believer in the social responsibility of his companies. Since establishing his own dedicated apprenticeship training program in 2004, the ABN Group continues to manage Australia’s largest private training group in the industry, with more than 1500 apprentices graduated. Through his Alcock Family Foundation, Dale has also donated more than $9 million over the last 14 years to worthy causes. Dale will be sharing insights and anecdotes gleaned from his time in business including:
